Derby Cathedral

I leave the rushing river of
muchness and madness
in the busy bustling street,
to linger
in this sacred place,
quiet space,
open to all.

Wrapped in the folds
of a sensuous silence,
I catch faint echoes of
a thousand years
of prayer;
I feel all saints
around me,
kneeling there.

The rhythms of the Daily Office
rise and fall in cascading-cadence,
a gentle tide of liturgy
lapping round my knees,
connecting me to something
so much bigger than myself.

I linger longer,
bathed in light and quiet;
a drenching dew
refreshing deep down
into the mysterious sinew,
connecting soul and spirit.

I rejoin the rushing river of
muchness and madness
in the busy bustling street,
taking something of
this sacred place,
quiet space,
to share with all.
